The mutual interlacing of ferredoxin with nitrogenase on several levels is treated in various contexts in this article. Early research on ferredoxins was summarized by Buchanan (230) in volume 1 of this series. Since then, an overwhelming amount of data on ferredoxins and other iron-sulfur proteins has been accumulated. For a complete coverage of this research the reader is referred to a comprehensive treatise of iron-sulfur proteins (231).

The nitrogenase-dependent H 2 evolution of Mo-deficient cells was stimulated by a 4 h treatment with tungstate to the same extent as with molybdate. Dinitrogen fixation showed a similar, though somewhat reduced capacity to be restored by tungsten. Although it was assumed that W substitution for Mo leads to an active nitrogenase in R. rubrum, it was also stated that growth of this organism in the presence of 10-Su tungstate did not exceed growth without Mo. A more detailed study will be required to clarify this point.
