If we can obtain a clearer transillumination image of deep-seated blood vessels, it can be used to assist the intravenous injection, the varicose-vein treatment, arterial catheterization, intraoperative observation of blood vessels and lymph ducts, and so on. This paper reports the development of a simultaneous observation system for body surface image and transillumination image of blood vessels to assist the intravenous injection. The feasibility of the injection assist was examined in an experiment.
Figure 6 shows a frame of the video image for visible and NIR illumination. They correspond to the images observed with the naked eye and in the HMD, respectively. The hardly visible blood tubes were visualized in the transillumination image with NIR light. Using the developed system, we could locate the blood tube, insert an injection needle, and extract the blood easily. This system allowed the user to confirm the position of the blood vessel by quickly comparing the visible and NIR images as often as he/she wanted.
